Swimmer Levels

The Hocken Family Swim Academy divides young swimmers into four primary levels and an infant level. For adults, we offer two levels for anyone looking to learn how to swim or improve their technique. 

All lessons are scheduled in 30 minute blocks reoccurring weekly with a maximum of three swimmers. Lessons are year-round and ongoing. Private lessons are offered as availability allows.

Each level's goals are detailed below. Once a swimmer completes each goal for their level, they will move up.

Young swimmer levels

Orange - Level 0

Infant Class

  • Safe entry & safe exit

  • Water acclimation - no fear

  • Practice streamline position

  • Introduction to back float

  • Introduction to breathing

Purple - Level 1

Water Acclimation

  • No fear entering the water

  • Back float for 2-5 seconds

  • Jump in independently with full submersion

Teal - Level 2

Water Acclimation

  • Push off from the wall and float for 20 seconds

  • Jump in and float for 20 seconds

  • Elementary backstroke for 10 strokes

  • Roll over from wall and float for 20 seconds

Pink - Level 3

Stroke Introduction

  • Backstroke for 15 meters

  • Breaststroke for 15 meters

  • Front crawl for 15 meters

  • Swim roll swim to safety

Green - Level 4

Stroke Technique

  • Demonstrate side breathing

  • Dolphin kicks 15 meters

  • Butterfly arms for 15 meters

  • Front crawl & backstroke for 30 meters

  • Tread water for 1 minute

Adult swimmer levels

Purple - Level 1

Water Acclimation

  • Safe entry & safe exit

  • Wall walking

  • 5 bobs / safety bobs

  • Front float

  • Back float

Pink - Level 2

Stroke Introduction

  • Elementary backstroke for 20 meters

  • Breaststroke for 20 meters

  • Front crawl for 10 meters with side breath

  • Backstroke for 10 meters

  • Treading water for one minute
