Swimmer Levels

The Hocken Family Swim Academy divides young swimmers into five primary levels plus an infant level.  For swimmers whom have advanced beyond level five we offer a course where your goals will be personalized to your needs. Finally, we offer three levels for adults looking to learn how to swim or improve their technique. 
Each swim level is detailed below including class size, length and finally guidelines for graduation.
All classes are 30 minutes in length and are available as a group or private structure. 
Infant classes up to level three, and all adult classes, have a maximum of 3 swimmers. Class levels four and above can include up to 4 swimmers. 
Inquire about classes 

  • Infant class - Parent + Toddler Group lesson

    • Safe entry & safe exit
    • Water acclimation - no fear
    • Practice streamline position
    • Introduction to back float
    • Introduction to breathing

  • Level 1 - Water Acclimation

    • No fear entering the water
    • Back float for 2-5 seconds
    • Jump in independently with full submersion

Infant Class

  • Safe entry & safe exit

PURPLE - 3 SWIMMERS MAXIMUM CLASS SIZE - 30 MINUTE PRIVATE or GROUP LESSONS

Level 1 - Water Acclimation

  • No fear entering the water
  • Back float for 2-5 seconds
  • Jump in independently with full submersion
Teal - 3 SWIMMERS MAXIMUM CLASS SIZE - 30 minute private or group lessons

Level 2 - Water Acclimation

  • Push off from the wall and float for 20 seconds
  • Jump in and float for 20 seconds
  • Elementary backstroke for 10 strokes
  • Roll over from wall and float for 20 seconds
Pink  - 3 SWIMMERS MAXIMUM CLASS SIZE - 30 minute private or group lessons

Level 3 - Stroke Introduction

  • Backstroke for 15 meters
  • Breaststroke for 15 meters
  • Front crawl for 15 meters
  • Swim roll swim to safety
Green - 4 SWIMMERS MAXIMUM CLASS SIZE - 30 minute private or group lessons

Level 4 - Swim Technique

  • Demonstrate side breathing
  • Dolphin kicks 15 meters
  • Butterfly arms for 15 meters
  • Front crawl & backstroke for 30 meters
  • Tread water for 1 minute
Blue - 4 SWIMMERS MAXIMUM CLASS SIZE - 30 minute private or group lessons

Level 5 - Technique Mastery

  • Butterfly for 15 meters
  • Breaststroke for 30 meters
  • Front crawl & backstroke for 45 meters
  • Flip turns
Beyond - 4 SWIMMERS MAXIMUM CLASS SIZE - 30 minute private or group lessons

Level 6 - Technique Mastery

  • Create individual goals personalized to each swimmer
PURPLE - 3 SWIMMERS MAXIMUM CLASS SIZE - 30 MINUTE PRIVATE or GROUP LESSONS

Adult Level 1 - Water Acclimation

  • Safe entry & safe exit
  • Wall walking
  • 5 bobs / safety bobs
  • Front float
  • Back float
Pink  - 3 SWIMMERS MAXIMUM CLASS SIZE - 30 minute private or group lessons

Adult Level 2 - Stroke Introduction

  • Elementary backstroke for 20 meters
  • Breaststroke for 20 meters
  • Front crawl for 10 meters with side breath
  • Backstroke for 10 meters
  • Treading water for one minute
Blue - 3 SWIMMERS MAXIMUM CLASS SIZE - 30 minute private or group lessons

Adult Level 3 - Technique Mastery

  • Front crawl for 20 meters
  • Backstroke for 20 meters
  • Side stroke
  • Flip turns (optional)
  • Butterfly (optional)
